[Given Liem’s sensitivity to the sun, a day trip to the beach is an unusual thing for him to have chosen to participate in. If not for the presence of the orphans, he never would have decided to come along. As it is, ever since the group arrived at the shore, he’s been lurking in the shade of a beach umbrella, covered up from head to toe with a pair of intensely dark sunglasses perched on his nose.
One of the orphans has attached herself to him, sticking to his side as packs of children hurl themselves down the beach and into the surf. Liem is a rather sober companion, so the company he offers consists mainly of quiet conversation as they sit together in the shade. But after she catches sight of the sand castle that Amos is in the midst of building, her shy preoccupation with it eventually convinces him to escort her over to the ongoing construction project.
