Though there's something to be said about the difference in his tone of voice from the last time they spoke. It would be hard to call Gen's delivery 'friendly' by any definition of the term, but his retort this time is completely lacking in venom, almost said more for the sake of saying it than to start a fight.
It's partly because of the exhaustion, admittedly, but it's also at least in part because Gen knows Eustace had no obligation to provide him any support. Most strangers he treated like he'd treated Eustace probably would have just dumped him on the ground and walked away. So as meager thanks for having the minimum level of patience with him, whether it's out of a soldier-ly sense of duty or if the guy's actually softer than he lets on, Eustace is treated to Gen's equivalent of 'banter' instead of the same vitriol from before.
Even if what he says next is pretty lacking in humor. A deadpan mumble almost to himself as he gingerly touches a hand to his black eye: ]
