Of course a stupid, hot-headed teenage boy, bristling with (battered) pride, would take that statement of 'I'll be a harsh teacher' as a challenge rather than the warning it was meant to be. Perhaps the only redeeming factor(?) here is that Gen answers with a certain level of gravity, more than just the empty, youthful bluster that Eustace might have expected. ]

[ That pause was only because he'd considered saying something else but had caught his words at the last moment; weird fantasy world or not, he's been taught too well not to talk about his father's shady business much. ] I'm tough.
