It's impossible to see anyone else in the room from outside, and Barnaby can hear a new voice from within, so he enters the building to bring up the rear of the group. "I'm unarmed," he says quietly. As for the soldiers: "If they're still here, I'll search the building for them." He can trust the others to tend to this man if he's wounded or in distress.
