Maybe he'd been one of the soldiers Eustace had trained alongside, many months ago. Eustace had tried not to pay too much attention to the faces on the battlefield, the men and women that had once been his allies and had been awed and honored to fight alongside him. He tries not to think about the guilt settling in his heart again, focusing instead on the Hayame's figure in front of him, growing increasingly more distant the longer they run.
Even running as fast as he can, his legs are no match for Hayame's much longer, sturdier ones, and the increase in gathering soldiers means he has to focus more attention on keeping their enemies - because that's what they are now, he has to accept that - at bay. Another round of shots fired, another sidestep as he narrowly avoids a soldier emerging from a small alley to his left.
Between the growing distance and the everpresent noise of the rest of the battle around (and above) them, he's not sure if she'll hear him if he shouts out one last set of directions. One last turn before it's a straight shot to the church and its ramps circling up to the roof.
He'll just have to hope she catches sight of it on her own, and that the ostentatious decoration both in front and around will be enough to catch her attention. ]
you are too kind to me
