More than old enough to handle himself— hell, he's likely older than the average Garlean recruit— but it's still too much to put on a stranger, especially one who is thankfully unaware of the situation in Cid's homeland.

As for his comment about being a blacksmith... "Smithing isn't my main forte– that would be magitek, but I've plenty of experience in developing armaments. I've been helping them when I can to repair their weapons. It's not much, but they certainly need every ilm of defense they can get."
He is almost certainly an overachiever, he can't deny that.
