August/Firaseri with Ryunosuke (newbies welcome)
WHO: Ryunosuke and YOU? (If you're a Pleroma) (sorry obi-wan kenomies)
WHAT: Combob July event aftermath and pre-August event newbie greeting
WHERE: Greentruth pretty much exclusively, sorry dedicated Bloodites :(
WHEN: Backdated 25th of July to... ??? Early August
WARNINGS: There are cw's marked by prompt.
NOTES: Ryu has picked up some pretty significant physical changes after this last event. Here's a very silly visual guide. Old characters who are familiar with it might note the wings are eerily evocative of the Innocence entity that showed up in Venera back in May. Also, either prose or brackets are fine here, I'll match whatever.
If you've got any questions or want to plan something specific, hit me up on plurk @
awkwardpossum or ping me on Discord.
In the Aftermath (for old characters)
Hunting...? Maybe. (OTA, CW for potential animal death. Yk. Forest game. Nothing too graphic.)
Bubble... Trouble :/ (OTA)
Welcome to my Offish... (OTA, cw for potential animal death (fish), again, nothing too graphic.)

In the Aftermath (for old characters)
Opinions may vary, but for Ryunosuke, it's hard not to see Venera as a sort of failure. Maybe not one for the Pleroma over all, but... At the very least for himself. Arguably the most important goal-- getting the Castillos out of the city and further from the Regent's grasp-- had been achieved. He's extremely grateful for that much.
Everything else though... He's still trying to come to terms with it. Getting captured and used as bait, failing to protect Estinien... In a way, he feels responsible for Abel and Himeka being captured too, though he'd never say as much without prompting, keeping that guilt close to his own heart.
He'd found a new sense of resolve in Venera, a willingness to defend by more violent means, if the circumstances called for it. But with a potential rescue operation looming... He's lost, uncertain if he's up to the task when he could just as easily wind up being a burden.
There's a lot to consider.
He can be found exclusively around Greentruth in the week or so after the 25th, only leaving to occasionally venture out and help check shrines once it becomes clear that more new Aions are starting to hatch. Besides that, he's taking it easy, his injured arm limiting how much he can contribute to his usual odd-jobbing around the settlement. He can be found wandering and resting here and there, but he's notably devoid of his typical high strung ambient energy. He's far more subdued, bordering on morose, and appears to be frequently lost in thought.
Hunting...? Maybe. (OTA, CW for potential animal death. Yk. Forest game. Nothing too graphic.)
Ryunosuke doesn't think he'll ever be alright specifically with wielding a blade against another person... The mere thought of it still makes him queasy. But with potential conflict looming, he's having to give much more thought to how he'll not only defend himself, but cause harm, if the situation comes down to it.
Much as he's been practicing with his bow since he got here, its been reserved mostly for non-living targets before now. But he's thinking that if he focuses on his strengths, the bow might be his best option... And as macabre as it is to think of it this way, maybe if he can get over shooting an animal... You know, for the sake of helping to feed the community...
He doesn't know the first thing about hunting and tracking, though, so. You can find him lingering somewhat anxiously around wherever the hunting parties tend to head out from, either too nervous or too embarrassed to ask to tag along. Help or heckle him, it's up to you.
Bubble... Trouble :/ (OTA)
Ryunosuke is wondering what else he can do with these strange forcefield bubbles that he's learned to cast. He gets the sense that they have potential, but he's never used them for much of anything other than some hasty blocking. He'll need volunteers to help him experiment, though. And as with any sort of experimentation, things might not always go as planned...
Generally he can be found around the training area, trying to hit the place when it's off peak hours and there are fewer people there. Feel free to ask him about what he's doing! It's weird magic. Even if you aren't a combatant or it's not your usual time to train, maybe you're drawn in by the obnoxiously loud 'POP's and 'BANG's that go off at around these times; investigation will lead you to Ryu, summoning these shimmering gold bubbles in mid-air, which he then concentrates on and appears to be trying to convince to burst on command, with mixed results.
(OOC note: Ryunosuke has a sleep spell now that he can use in tandem with the bubbles, but he hasn't quite figured it out; if you want to volunteer your character for accidental naptime, let me know in the subject line of your tag-in.)
Welcome to my Offish... (OTA, cw for potential animal death (fish), again, nothing too graphic.)
There's one other place you can frequently find Ryunosuke, and that's the lake near Greentruth. He's always at his most relaxed around the water, and now he's picked up fishing as an interest thanks to Himeka.
It's a good way for him to mostly turn his brain off, while still contributing something back to the resistance. Mostly he's using a fishing rod, but sometimes you might see him in the shallows with his pant legs rolled up, attempting a weird new method: scooping a bunch of fish up in one of his little bubbles and very... Very carefully floating it over to dry land.
...Sometimes if he catches a bunch of little bait fish, he'll just stand there holding the bubble up in front of him, pensively watching the little critters inside for a bit before he lets them go again. He seems weirdly fond of them!
Bubble Trouble (naptime a-okay lol)
And she can’t help but be curious about the intermittent noises coming from that direction. She’s not sure what she expects to find there, but she discovers that the bangs are coming from some very peculiar bubbles being conjured by an even more peculiar looking young man. She comes to a halt at what she deems a safe distance away and watches quietly for a moment while he manages to get one of the shimmering bubbles to pop.
She winces, but her expression quickly shifts to something more bemused as she turns her attention to Ryunosuke.]
Those are quite attention-grabbing, I must say.
no subject
Hah! Y-yes. Sorry, I hope the noise wasn't bothering you too much... I'd like to find somewhere a bit more soundproofed to practice, if I could...
[He's realizing that her face is an unfamiliar one; handily, he has recently gained the ability to actually tell when someone is an Aion or not, which is turning out to be extremely useful with the shrines turning active again. Just a quick glimpse confirms it.]
Ah...! Wait, you... You're one of the newly arrived Aions, aren't you?
no subject
[It’s been something of a whirlwind for her, these past few days since arriving in Horos. A new home to familiarize herself with, an endless stream of new faces to meet… Thankfully, most of the Aions she’s met thus far have by and large been rather inviting and kind. Ryunosuke seems at first glance to fit that trend, if his apology and that bashful (if a little disconcerting, what with the teeth…) grin is anything to judge by.]
Hopefully I’m not getting in the way of your practice, darling. I was trying to get a feel for where everything is here in Greentruth, and I couldn’t help being curious at the noise…
no subject
[He makes an awkward, kind of wobbly gesture with one hand.]
...A-anyway. Um. My name is Ryunosuke Naruhodo! It's a pleasure to meet you!
no subject
The pleasure’s all mine, sweetie. [Carefully tucking that amused expression of hers away, she clasps her hands idly before her.]
If you don’t mind my asking, what exactly are those bubbles of yours for? Aside from being noisy, of course. [She winks.]
no subject
Ah, well. The noise is... New, actually. I've only just realized I can make them do that. And not very reliably... They function more like shields, most of the time.
no subject
Shields, hm? I imagine there must be a lot of use for something like that, considering the… conflict, and all.
[And defensive magic sounds much more palatable than the offensive sort she’s gone to such trouble to learn.]
Srry, vacation killed me 😩
[He winces slightly, hinting at memories of harrowing recent experiences that have necessitated a lot of shielding.]
I'm not much of a fighter as is, but recently I've been wondering if they could have more versatility in use... So I've been... Experimenting, I suppose?
[That word feels really strange on his tongue but. Yeah, that's what it is, he guesses.]
hunting
Still, they tend to gather and discuss plans of travel in the mornings for some time. Given his own insomnia, and working load, he passes them by before they head out. Offers amicable good mornings and good luck. Most of them are seasoned hunters - thrilled for the hunt. You can tell it in their eyes and the way they approach each other. It's a job. So when one person seems like a ball of nerves somewhere in the back, something like a mouse it's noticeable.
Especially when the other has groan big goofy ears and a tail ontop of wings. For a moment Hiccup thinks to let it be - But maybe it's just that Ryuunosuke looks so out of place as he often felt in his youth that gets him to stop. If nothing else the squeak of a prosthetic gives him away, but Hiccup doesn't look ready for a hunt - though he does have the shield he's been working on swung across his pack and looks like he'd been out doing something of his own.
"You look lost," he mentioned by way of greeting, cutting to the chase, "you good?"
no subject
Hiccup's voice nearby interrupts his fretting, and those goofy ears of Ryunosuke's twitch in acknowledgement.
"Huh, wh-who, me?" he gives a little jolt, turning to face Hiccup properly and finally registering who it is. "Oh! Hiccup. S-sorry... Hah. I suppose I must look more out of place than I'd already expected, huh..."
no subject
At least he owns up to look out of place, but then something tells him the other isn't used to living out in the wilderness to begin with. Probably one of those big cities that Ernesto once talked about. Definitely not someone used to survival. Still, even those who grew up in those kind of conditions weren't the best fit for it. He should know.
Hiccup glances past Ryunosuke towards the gathered group and then back. "You know," he offered, "you don't have to go out there with them. Hunting isn't for everyone."
no subject
Ryunosuke slumps slightly, looking defeated as Hiccup manages to see right into the heart of what the issue is.
"I know," he groans quietly, fretfully. "It's just... Well, I thought it might be good to at least try to learn, if I could. Work on my self reliance and all that...."
no subject
"There's plenty of ways to do that," He offered readily, not missing a beat, "there's plenty of a need for fisherman. You can also learn about the flora and making gardens - Getting vegetables to grow can be as tough as felling an animal." Which, at least on Berk was true; Given it was winter for most of the year and the ground was nearly hard as a rock. The fact they ate more than fish or had enough to go around was a miracle most days.
He raises a hand and lowers it in a 'you see' kind of gesture as he shakes his head. "There's plenty of other things you can do," Hiccup adds, trying to be helpful as he offers, "going out without having your heart committed or understanding what they're going for is just as much dangerous to yourself as it is to the others." This part is said more knowingly - as someone who'd... Been exactly that problem once before.
no subject
So he just kind of deflates further and further the longer Hiccup goes on, until he can barely meet the other man's eye, and that last point becomes a final straw.
"I know!" Ryunosuke practically explodes with dismay, briefly drawing looks of disapproval from some of the hunters. Ryunosuke barely notices them, slumping backwards against the walkway railing and slowly dropping to the floor.
"That's exactly the problem, Hiccup, I'm-- I'm committed to this cause, and I want to help the other Pleroma, but... Killing? Even if it's not permanent, I just... I can't..."
He trails off, pushing a hand back through his dark hair. Hiccup will have to piece everything together himself because Ryunosuke doesn't seem to realize the insane jump he's just made, going from talking about hunting to talking about war.
no subject
"I get it," Hiccup's voice is as quiet as it is measured. Mouth drawn into a frown and eyes flickering away from the other. He moves, not to console him but to take a spot next to him near the walkway. His arms rest against the banister and instead of looking down he keeps attention straight ahead, on the forest that's so far away from Berk yet somehow feels enough like home to be of some comfort.
He's quiet a moment, somber as he considers further. There's really no reconciling of what happens here. Survival? No, this is bigger - the fate of the entire world. Of all of them. It should be easier to not hesitate when it comes to what they must do. He knows his father could do it. He knows Astrid would, too. Maybe even Toothless. A chief protects his own, but what happens when that own is extinguished? Or...?
Hiccup shakes it off, and takes a deep breath as he takes in simple measure. "I can't kill someone who's in the same position as me," he mentioned, a finger tapping the wood of the rail, "no one chose to be here. I can't agree that the Kenoma chose to go where they are... From the moment we got here, it's always been under someone else's plans. I can't help but think if it had been just a little different I'd have been on that side." The Kenoma's. He knows the experience for the new Pleroma is different. Not many of them suffered the same side-effects of their first arrivals. He's glad for that. But he thinks many of them may see it differently - not Ryunosuke- that there was really any choice. For the first batch, there wasn't much of one.
Though he still wonders about the Kenoma martyr and how it seemed their escape was helped along... That too, was probably what they wanted, right? But why?
He sighs. "I couldn't even if it was like that," he admitted after a moment, truthful in the matter. "I still can't help but think there has to be a way to do this that isn't just... Killing anything that crosses our path, because doesn't that make us no better than them?" If they're about preserving life how can they end it so easily? It's not something... It's never been something he agreed with, even as a child. When he realized where his heart really is.
"Maybe that's why guys like us are here. There's got to be a way - something. If not, why are we here in the first place, right?"
in the aftermath
but when he does spot a familiar face with some incredibly unfamiliar qualities, including one which makes his skin crawl on first glance?
of course he'll stop. see if he can get his attention.
shard out, toge waves with his other hand. ]
Hey! Ryunosuke!
no subject
It's impossible to be annoyed about his moping getting interrupted when the one doing the interrupting is Toge. Ryunosuke loves to see that little guy.]
Oh! Toge! [He grins and waves back.] Just a moment--
[He fishes out his shard to hold, so they can converse more directly... A gesture which he greatly appreciates, because he's way too brain tired and stretched thin to figure out charades+onigiri speak right now. Even if reading Toge's brain texts and talking to him face to face can also take some getting used to.]
How are you, my friend? [He thinks back through the communion, just to test the connection, and then says aloud:] Doing alright, I hope?
no subject
but his eyes brighten, his smile wide enough to crinkle he fabric that normally covers his lips. ]
I'm fine! Just... mmm. Still recovering. I've never seen a gun shoot lightning before.
[ or felt anything like it. he'd like to avoid that again if he can help it. ]
But I should be asking about how you are.
no subject
Ah! Did you run afoul of that man as well? The stoic looking Kenoma with, with the strange... Weirdly sort of adorable ears?
[...Says the guy who also has strange ears now?? He either doesn't notice or care about the irony of that because, as he says that, Ryunosuke raises both hands (with his shard still awkwardly grasped in one) to the top of his head, mimicking the approximate location of Eustace's ears, wiggling his index fingers in an evocative manner.]
I think he got me with that as well. Not the worst hit I took while we were down there, but... Hardly pleasant to experience.
no subject
meanwhile, toge has normal ones. wow! super unfair. ]
... I'm sorry you had to feel it.
[ because while he's used to pain and all kinds of it, he can't imagine his relatively Normal friend is. ]
Even though he doesn't seem like it on first glance... I think he's kind. I want to think all of them are, you know? It's wishful thinking, but if I don't think that, then... I have to treat them differently.
I THOUGHT I REPLIED TO THIS AAAAHHHH
Anyway, he's right on that! Ryunosuke's definitely not used to pain of that variety. Electric shocks, especially. Luckily, Eustace was just giving him a little deterrent at a low power level... But Ryu has no way of knowing that.
He gestures to invite Toge to sit next to him, replying aloud:]
I understand... And I feel the same. On all accounts, actually. [He frowns thoughtfully.] That man especially... I don't think he agrees with the Kenoma any longer. We talked a fair bit, while I was...
[He cuts off, looking embarrassed suddenly. He kind of... Has been avoiding talking about how he got kidnapped, briefly? Whoops.]
me rolls back around like a lopsided seal
time to sit. which funnily enough, he made eustace do. hehe.
it's okay. he can feel it. doesn't take communion to make toge want to skirt the issue if ryu also wants to. but everything else is definitely fair game for him to think openly about, as toge looks up. ]
I'm glad. And I'll have to apologize to him, too. If he's doing what he had to just to escape... I don't...
[ let him feel guilty for a moment. ]
... anyway. If only words could work all the time, huh?
no subject
Gods. Yes... If only.
[He laces his fingers together, resting his hands in his lap.]
Where I come from, words aren't always enough on their own, but... They still carry significant weight. Then, around Horos, I have to count myself lucky if I can get even a single sentence out.
no subject
[ one is worse than the other but they still both suck, so. a lose-lose situation for someone whose words are certainly worth taking into consideration. ]
Rude either way.
[ toge closes his eyes and laughs inwardly, again... thinking before 'speaking'. ]
They say actions speak louder than words. Right? My words are my actions so I envy you, Ryunosuke. I think yours are... you've tried very hard. It's admirable.
THE OFFISH
"Whoah!" Her neck curves up to look at him. She clearly thought there was no one else here. "Uh, hey. I didn't scare you, right?"
no subject
Well, she can probably feel that she has, in fact, scared him pretty badly. This forest is full of big dangerous reptiles and, no offense to Tsunami, she sort of looks the part? But when she speaks, his sense of alarm quickly gives way to awe, and he blinks his newly acquired true-sight on to pick up the glow of her shard.
"You... You're an Aion!" he says aloud in wonderment. "And a Champion as well?!"
no subject
"Um, yeah?"
A pause; she tilts her head.
"How can you tell?" She peers at him. "Are you one too?"
no subject
He's still boggling at that point, but he manages to knock it off long enough to actually get his thoughts together and answer her question properly.
"Er, that is..." He rubs the back of his neck awkwardly. "I'm guessing no one has told you, but... I-it's fairly easy to tell, when someone came the same shrine as you. It's a bit uncanny, really... You can sort of... Sense their feelings? Far more keenly than you can with other Aions who are of a different legacy."
Right now, for instance, he's feeling a bit skittish and worried, that she's going to be upset to hear about that connection. He knows he was, at first.
no subject
"... So that's you, then!"
She propels herself round onto her front with one of her wings to get a better look at him, and then she laughs, somewhat relieved.
"Wow, that makes loads more sense, there's no way I'd be scared of a little guy like you. Even if you did kind of surprise me.
... You're right, though, it's really weird."
Although... she thinks it could be more weird. Even though he's a completely different species, what he's feeling is extremely obvious from the way he looks and sounds. It would, Tsunami thinks, be a lot weirder to be magically sensing the feelings of someone who was otherwise really stoic.
no subject
"O-oh, uh.... Well, you do get used to it, eventually," he chuckles, sharp teeth flashing a bit as he smiles. "At least... I did, and I hope you'll feel the same in time..."
('Little guy', huh? He supposes he would seem so, especially to a creature her size...)
He's still kind of low-key flustered, purely because he's... Well, he's talking to a dragon? He assumes that's what she is, at least...
no subject
"So that means you're from the same shrine, then," she says, peering at him.
She'd been kind of assuming that 'Champion' meant you were very strong and cool, but this guy really doesn't look all that strong, even for a human. If he is a human, anyway. Tsunami has already learned that some people who look about as different from what she'd consider a 'regular' human as she does from an IceWing are nonetheless not humans, and may even be offended if you call them that—and this specific possibly-a-human definitely has some unusual features.
no subject
He puts on a polite grin anyway, sharp teeth on display.
"Ah... Y-yes, it does. I came in a few months ago, though."
no subject
She cocks her head like a very large bird.
"You don't look very... Champion-y. Are you a human?"
no subject
Also, ouch? Although he can't exactly argue with her assessment. IGNORING THAT, THOUGH...
"Ahhhahahah... Yes, I. I am." His ears stick out to the sides of his head, further betraying his embarrassment. "...Contrary to current appearances, that is."
no subject
no subject
"Not... Exactly. No," Ryunosuke says, deflating a bit further. "Actually, I'm. I'm a defense attorney? That's, that's a sort of lawyer, if you're familiar with the term."
no subject
"Oh, yeah... I've watched a trial before." She grimaces a little, remembering Osprey. "Okay... Hmm. I guess that kind of makes sense. If you were, like, trying to stop innocent people from getting executed by crazy rulers, right?"
no subject
"Y... Yes! That's precisely it! I mean-- I suppose execution isn't strictly on the table in every case but-- Most of the time, yes. I argue in court on behalf of people who have been wrongfully accused of crimes."
no subject
"I think if it was me I'd just fight whoever was trying to kill them... or whatever other kind of punishment... but that doesn't always work, right?" Nobody could beat Peril, and if Peril hadn't found out what really happened with Kestrel... She sighs. "I guess sometimes it's more important to make sure everyone knows the truth, huh."
no subject
no subject
"Yeah... and sometimes it's not enough for just you to know what really happened, right? You have to make it so everyone else hears it as well."
no subject
Take it from a guy who knows.
Maybe he realizes he's getting carried away, though, because he pauses to clears his throat and shakes out his wings a little awkwardly, offering her an apologetic smile.
"To be honest... I'm surprised to hear that dragons hold trials. Judicial systems strikes me as a very human thing to uphold... I hope you won't take offense to my saying so, since you've already proven my assumption incorrect."
no subject
no subject
"I guess that makes sense... There are quite a few humans out there who do enjoy thievery..." Thinking of you, Gina. He pauses, and then his brow furrows with concern. "...Wait, so they steal from... From your kind? From dragons?"
That sounds HORRIBLY ill advised.
