[KENOMA MINGLE] entertainment district

WHO: SILCO and any kenomies looking for a tour/bar run/mingle
WHAT: MINGLE LOG
WHERE: Achamoth Entertainment District
WHEN: Firaseri - two days after the gossip posts
WARNINGS: Drugs, Alcohol, General Debauchery -- let me know if anything new comes up, but it's the Entertainment District so standard warnings apply

↝ An Invitation

[ Whether the character is new or old, each retainer has been given a small invitation to hand to their aion. It is simple, and neat -- the words are clear. It has a date for two days after Ciel and Emet-Selch's addresses, and includes a time in the evening. For current Kenoma-aligned aions, it includes a bar to find -- those who are familiar with the tour Silco gave last time will recognize the bar as the same, one with a private loft. They can make their way there, if they know the way. If not, they'll be able to meet with the newer aions at the entrance to the citadel, where there's even the offer for a "tour" of the entertainment district, if they're not familiar with the entertainment district as a whole.

Retainers -- whether a character has one or not -- will slip the invitation to each Aion the day before, as a tacit offer. There's no name, and no identification as to who it is that's offering this. You'll just have to find out later.
]

↝ He's a Docent Tour Guide

[ When the sun just slips beneath the horizon, and twilight begins to take hold, that's the time at which the tour happens. Silco waits at the entrance, a cigar in hand, and right on the dot, he's out the door, to take any that want a guide down into the belly of the entertainment district. He offers one bit of advice, before they leave -- cover up your shards -- and as they step out and into the streets, if any characters don't follow the advice, they'll find fawning, exciteable Achamites, ready to offere them deals, sing their praises, or even throw gifts of jools or flowers at their feet.

The tour is thorough, and actually a touch on the long side. Characters are promised drinks at the destination, but as one winds through the streets, there are plenty of other bars to visit if anyone peels off. There are also solicitors for companionship from the brothels on the way, and some will even offer to follow an aion to the bar, if they so chose. The bloodsport arenas are rife with excitement, and the thundering roars of applause and boos is almost overhwelming when one passes by -- even through the walls -- and the drunken revelers stumbling out of the arenas are in contrast to the bloodied combatants that leave next.

On some corners, drugs are offered, and Silco will be able to provide a near...encyclopedic knowledge of them, if asked -- he will even share what he knows. Has he had them? No, has he bought them and subjected the effects and taken notes on them? Yes. Don't ask why -- or do and get a snarky answer, sure.

Whether the new aions (and old if they tag along) have any new drugs, companions, drinks, or have peeled off -- the tour group arrives at a bar, and are escorted in, almost expected, breathless from the staff. They know who broght them by, so it's easy to figure out that they're hosting Aions tonight.
]

↝ Pint of No Return

[ The bar itself is trendy, within Achamoth. There are high ceilings, live music, and while the main floor of the bar is filled with unwitting locals -- up the stairs and into the large loft is the center of the gathering. It's large enough to hold the Aions, with a private bartender, snacks, and the music is muted and soft up in the loft area.

Along with the drinks and snacks courtesy of the bar itself features an offering of the drugs available in Achamoth, and the staff had been nice enough to offer primer cards, with some of the effects. Most are... basic. Floaty highs, or ones that put one to sleep, or make one laugh for hours. Since it's an enclosed space, nothing is quite as... violent or exciting as some of the drugs available on the streets. Perhaps though, one used their jools, and brought one inside. There's no limit, feel free to do what one wishes -- after all, that's the theme of the Entertainment District, isn't it?

The music down below picks up at some point -- the music might just be glowing songs about the Regent. Think Christian Nu Rock, but it's themed about Achamoth's glorious leader. The crowd downstairs is boistrous -- almost indulgent and thrumming with excitement with adulation for their leader. It's normal, for things to get like this, and nobody with the bar staff seems a bit disturbed, in fact, some staff may be swaying along with the music -- it's clear who owns Achamoth, through and through, and it's the Regent.

And if an Aion notices, some of the patrons might be trying to sneak upstairs. Did something get out that there was someone up here who was an Aion? Even though the Citadel is so close, some will always want to be a little close to a celebrity, some might even get up to the bar, and nervously approach a newer looking Aion that hasn't been seen before. Did they have questions, or was it just the... exciting prospect of being next to an Aion? You can talk to them, or nudge them away, but eventually someone with security will come, nod at you, and escort them out. Maybe not before there's a flurried rush of quesitons, or maybe they'll try to give you something. It's all uncomfortable, and awkward, no matter what.

It's debauchery, and whether or not one is used to it, it's the way of things in Achamoth. Spend time with your fellow aions, ask questions, but above all else -- have a little bit of fun, before things go to hell in a few days.
]

↝ [ This is a mingle/tour log! Feel free to make your own starters, tag about, and let everyone have a... little bit of fun before things go to hell here soon. Everyone can be expected to get a few free drinks to start the night -- be creative, do whatever! Peel off into groups, get lost in the city, call for help, the sky's the limit! ]

Oh, that is ... Matt tries not to stare, but his gaze can't help hooking on the liquid dripping onto his new coworker's mask. The wet spread.

Just for a moment, though. It's none of his business how other people drink, and based on the contrast between this guy's outfit and Matt's own, they have some baseline aesthetic differences. (That noose, for instance, is quite a fashion statement.)

"A lot of these people really believe in what they're doing," Matt answers, taking another sip from his drink. "They have faith in the Kenoma. The Regent. And that gives them ... a sense of joy, even when they're giving up the things they care about the most. Their senses. Even their lives."

"Mmm." Crane ponders that for a moment. "Faith is admittedly an area I have little expertise in." There are numerous ways that religion can be used to terrify and traumatize, of course, and in those Crane's knowledge is vast, but the concept that underlies the whole idea of religion, of faith, is something he's never truly been able to understand, or really ever feel. "A city and people that actively rejects the concept of hope, and for whom being saved would be a punishment worse than death."

He chuckles, shaking his head. "In my world, there were people who thought my city was one of the worst places imaginable." Less so once the Batman began his crusade, but Gotham's corruption and filth was so deep and ingrained it never truly went away; crime and poverty were still rampant, and most of the city's leaders uninterested in anything but pursuing their own glory and agendas. "They truly had no idea, for they still sought hope, and looked to one who sought to provide it. No hero could save this city, because it does not want to be saved."

Now he reaches up and wipes away the stain of his wine from his chin, running a hand across it. "I don't believe I caught your name."

A punishment worse than death ... that's right. The Achamites understand, in a way that Matt still doesn't, that prolonging life now is just a prolonging of suffering. He nods along as his new companion pontificates. Matt's had his own struggles with the Kenoma--more specifically with the Regent's demands, but with the Kenoma itself too--and he thinks it's important to make space for people to process. As he told the Regent all these months ago now, most Aions come from life-centric cultures. The unlearning takes time, even when you don't want it to.

"I appreciate the conviction these people have," Matt says. "It helps keep me centered. Reminds me what's at stake. Some of the other cities ... I don't blame the people there for acting the way they do, but they're a lot more self-centered. They're very about, you know, promoting their lives and the lives of people they like, day-to-day concerns. Material things."

At the question, Matt starts sheepishly. His left arm half-lifts--in the past, in moments of embarrassment or uncertainty, it was common for him to scrub his left hand across his cheek, over the faint scar there. He can't do it now, of course.

"Oh, ah, sorry. I always forget that part. Matt Jamison, nice to meet you ... I don't think I caught yours either."

"It's remarkable." Crane agrees. "There have been cultures that revered death to one degree or another, but not like this. In any other society so focused on its own eventual non-existence, despair would have crushed them long ago." Most people, being from those "life-centric cultures" would find it an abominable way to live. But to Crane, it's a fascinating thing to observe and study.

"They focus on the things they can control so they do not have to confront the reality they cannot. That their existences will end, and soon." Crane nods. "The more natural reaction. People have often fled into the distractions escapism can provide to avoid the harsh realities of life."

Crane's gaze takes in the aborted movement, but he makes no comment. He simply bows his head. "Indeed you did not, Mister Jamison. Doctor Jonathan Crane...though I have also gone by "Scarecrow" in certain other circles."

Matt's lips twitch. He doesn't particularly love being called unnatural, even obliquely, but he's no stranger to it. Where he comes from, magic users were nearly universally considered to fall on the less natural side.

Oh, just Matt, he's about to protest, but his left hand's throbbing distracts him. Crane moves on, dropping the curious moniker 'Scarecrow.'

"Certain circles?" Matt repeats, eyebrows arching. Roller derby? Antifa? Cult? It could be anything; but it does, at least, seem to explain the burlap. Still, as curious as Matt (always) is, he doesn't intend to press the issue. He feints slightly instead. "Right, you're a doctor. I think I heard something about that on the ... when we all met the new folks? Did you say you were a psychologist, or am I misremembering?"

"Psychology, yes." Crane correct, smiling thinly. "Though these days I tend to prefer biochemistry." Since his medical license was revoked. Psychologists are supposed to help their patients get better. Crane was only interested in plumbing his patients deepest fears...and then using those fears against them. Hence, the interest in biochem.

"The two disciplines compliment each other quite well. I've been very successful."

"Ah, yeah. Well, that makes sense--I mean, I'm sure all academic fields are interrelated in some way." Matt takes a longer sip of his drink, hoping to discreetly allay some of the ache in his arm. "But the mind and body are so connected. I'm not surprised you found some overlap."

He smiles faintly. "Will I be boring you if I ask what some of the successes were?"

His time as a graduate student, limited though it was, suggests absolutely not. Still, it seems polite to ask.

"That they are." Crane watches Matt take the longer drink, and then his eye darts briefly to his missing hand. "I have always respected the power of the mind over the body. The strongest person in the world, will still be at the mercy of their own mind. All that strength..." He reaches up and taps the side of his head with a finger. "Useless, if the chemicals in here are unbalanced in just a certain, tiny way." Now that is power. That is the power that broke the Bat.

"Not at all." Crane replies with another thin smile. "My greatest success has been the development of a hallucinogenic gas that causes the affected to experience their greatest and most primal fears. They are horrifically real." Crane's voice swells with noticeable pride. "And if injected in its purest form directly into the bloodstream, not only is the effect even more magnified, it leaves the most magnificent psychological scars. Repeated exposure will break down even the strongest of wills over time, and lead to irrevocable madness."

He takes another sip of his drink. It is an excellent vintage. "I say psychology and biochemistry, but really they've both only been means to an end of my true calling; the proliferation of fear."

Matt looks almost rueful as Crane expounds. He is thoroughly, miserably aware of the mind's power over the body. He even knows why his stump hurts, at least in broad strokes: His brain is sending impulses to the site of his missing hand, and can't make sense of what it doesn't find there. But such is the power of the body, or the brain-that-can't-be-reasoned-with, that knowing what's happening doesn't make it any less potent.

"That does sound interesting," Matt muses. There's no distaste in his voice or expression, per se. He finds Crane's clear relish to be a bit macabre, but at the same time, fear is elemental--just like desire is. He can understand being fascinated by it. (And he can't help wondering what he'd see, under the influence of a gas like that.) "What is it about fear that calls you?"
