EVENT #6: BY HEAVEN OR HELL
By Heaven or Hell
THE BURNING

The city is in the throes of these preparations when the two Pleroma captives are finally brought to a central square not far from the Citadel's front gates. Two burning pyres have been set up for them, about ten feet apart. While Abel and Himeka's bodies are chained to their stakes, their shards will be handed off to Silco, Ciel, and Makoto to be brought along separately. The set up of the execution is thus: while their bodies are ravaged by flames, their shards will be bound to an altar in advance of the pyre. Via a kind of alchemical 'fuse', the pyre being lit will trigger a reaction that will gradually result in a explosion on the altar just large enough to destroy the shard in turn. The shards will be bound in position with a series of jewelry-like metal prongs that could be pried away, but would take some time to do carefully.
As the Pleroma make it to the city, the sun will be setting on the 17th of Firaseri, with the execution about to be underway. The pyres will not yet have been lit, but are fully prepared. All Kenoma will be called upon to guard the city, with the warning that the Pleroma are mounting a raid to rescue their imprisoned comrades. For Kenoma both new and old, it's a time to test your mettle. Those that defend Achamoth valiantly can expect to be rewarded.
INNOCENCE ON FIRE

Initially, getting into the city unmolested will be a considerable struggle for the Pleroma. It's military is robust, its fortifications solid, and even without the Kenoma's added resistance, the sheer numbers could be considered insurmountable. Stealth could get them some of the way, but its sentries are watchful, and immigration is strictly controlled. With faith alone driving the Pleroma towards their goal it's fortunate, then, that something is there to answer their call.
Estinien will feel the presence of the Innocence Entity rise up in him again, and this time it is offering him a choice. He may utilize its power to save the ones he loves, while risking both the brutality of the Regent's defenses and the threat to his own soul by channeling such power. It will stand with him against the darkness, it says, if it is truly his will. Emboldened by the power of the Firebrand and his love for his comrades, it is no surprise that he accepts.
Light will flood the sky above Achamoth, an ethereal aura combatting the encroach of the night. From a great miasma of wings and flame, a colossal dragon emerges, coiling above the city skyline. Its luminescence rains down upon the city, and all Achamites exposed to it will be enchanted into finding the idea of committing acts of violence unthinkable, at least so long as no violence is brought against them in turn. With much of Achamoth's defenses having lost the will to fight, only the Kenoma will stand in the Pleroma's way as they penetrate the city, making their way to Abel and Himeka's pyres.
As the Pleroma forge ahead, this draconic being that was once Estinien Wyrmblood will guard from the skies, drawing the attention of the Kenoma towards it and it threatens to bear its might against the Citadel itself. Fortunately for the Kenoma guarding the city, they will know that the Regent has a plan. All they must do is hold off the beast long enough for the Regent to wield their own strength in turn. The battle against this creature will take place here, with combat rules being explain in this OOC post.
As the power of the Innocent washes over Achamoth, those of its Legacy, or those marked by its Promise or Touch, will hear it speak on the winds in a chorus of voices:
Aions of this new dawn... I have honored your choice... fight... if you will... and I will follow...
FIREBRAND RISING

❖ PLEROMA
The Firebrands among the Pleroma raiders will feel a sense of vindication and rightness come over them, set as they are to challenge the Regent's rule. Their powers will be amplified during the battle, and those that witness them and are inspired may find their performance boosted. The nature of these enhancements is fairly flexible. For the Firebrands, the use of their regular skills and abilities may be amplified beyond normal boundaries, whereas those following in their wake may find themselves with usual endurance that allows them to push their their usual limits.
❖ KENOMA
The Firebrands of the Kenoma's inspiration is more complicated in nature, given their roll in defending Achamoth's status quo. However, they will find themselves bolstered while facing the pacifying might of the Innocence Entity. Firebrands will experience a natural resistance against any Innocence based attacks that would stop them from fighting, and will be able to use this blessing to rally NPCs that would otherwise be rendered useless to their cause, in defiance of the entity's command for peace. In general, they will see a boost in strength while fighting the raid boss in particular, unable to be deterred from their goals.
In general, all Firebrands will feel untethered by their regular inhibitions, fighting for their desires at all costs. Abilities intended to bind them or control their will, will be largely ineffective, and they will find shields both physical and magical particularly easy to break through.
QUESTIONS
Q: What is the best way for Pleroma to travel to Achamoth?
A: Akua and Estinien are both setting up portals from Godsblood to the outskirts of Achamoth from which to begin mounting the assault. Caitlyn will be providing a back-up in the case either of those portals go down.
Q: Can my character make use of the chaos and try to raid the Citadel?
A: They can try but there will be mod rolls involved for any attempts. NPCs inside the Citadel will not be affected the same way the NPCs outside in main area will be. We do not want it to seem like the Citadel is defenseless otherwise.
Q: If Kenoma cause damage to the city during the raid, how will the Regent feel? Will there be consequences?
A: It should try to be avoided, but the Regent will understand if there is collateral damage in battle as long as they aren't being careless about it.
Q: Is the "no-combat aura" completely incapacitating NPCs?
A: No, it is only stopping them from aggressing the Pleroma. If they or their property are attacked they will defend themselves, and are otherwise operating with a normal level of cognizance. Kenoma Aions can order them out of the area to avoid being hurt if necessary.
BOSS BATTLE:
Q: I would like my character to take part in the battle but want to limit the outcomes in a way that isn't too devastating. Is that possible?
A: We think in that case we would basically only be acknowledging the possibilities between the "The attack either misses, is ineffective, or it triggers a counter attack from the boss." and "The attack hits with moderate effectiveness, as determined by the nature of their action." range. So, you can't get taken out, but you also can only deal moderate hits at best. You could still trigger a counter attack from the boss, but the damage taken from that is more flexible and free form than the 1-5% zone. If you make an attack with this restriction just add a little OOC note to your initial attack tag.
Q: How can a support character engage in the combat?
A: If your character is providing support, you may team up with an attacker to submit a "group attack". This means that your character is putting their effort towards supporting that attacker character that round, and will not be able to submit their own separate action. In exchange, that attack will receive two mod rolls instead of one, and the attack itself will be based on the more favorable of the two rolls. (Sort of like rolling with an advantage in modern D&D.) We will make as many rolls as there there are character combining their effort and select the best of them.
If any character rolls in the 1-5% zone they will still be taken out, however. Click the link above for more information.
Q: Can my character take a hit for another character after a mod roll?
A: We would be willing to accept this in the case of the defender taking the hit for the attacker, which would mean that if it's a 1-5%, they would be taken out in the attacker's stead.

Sooyoung eyes his bow and quiver, a grimace on her face as she imagines how this conversation could have gone -- her stuck full of arrows like an idiot. She touches the hilt of the sword on her hip as if in response. Still, what does it say about her that she's still standing here in front of him, despite the very real danger?
Well, whatever. She never said she wasn't an idiot. And anyway, her relationship with Yoo Joonghyuk goes beyond 'Pleroma' and 'Kenoma', no matter if this entire world tries to box them into either faction,]
You think I had the time to?
[it's her usual bluster -- an effort to cover up her annoyance that no, she really hasn't found anything useful in the interim.]
Kim Dokja told me about what that Kenoma stuff does to you. You never said that it makes you even more depressed.
no subject
Maybe this is too much faith in her, but: ]
You had several days with them.
[ Not that he learned that much more... A lot of the books in Achamoth are Regent propaganda, though he read up on Legacies thinking there may be importance rather than... Astrology and horoscopes. Stars wield powers in their home, so no one should fault him.
Her next outburst has him raise his eyebrows. Flashes of his initiation in the lodestone come to mind. Crossing his arms, he offers a look of annoyance, which may seem normal. ]
Do I look depressed?
no subject
Even if this raid will just show all those shortcomings -- is already showing those shortcomings. Can she keep pretending that she isn't part of the Pleroma when she joined them on this rescue attempt?]
You could be super depressed or super ecstatic. I'd never be able to tell just by looking at you.
[If Kim Dokja has his tells, then Yoo Joonghyuk's are just the one. That it's super hard to tell with him in the first place.]
Maybe it is changing you. Maybe you just can't tell.
no subject
... And for that, he despises it and wishes to eradicate it from his body. For this, he believes the Regent should pay. Anyone that thinks to make him a puppet is a fool and they will suffer by his blade.
Yet, more than himself, he has to consider their world, their friends, their family gone to the void. The hand holding the bow by his side tightens in its grip, deliberating between all of these emotions. His voice is leveled, unwavering. ]
Is that it?
[ Is that all she has to say? ]
no subject
She watches Yoo Joonghyuk's hand tighten, the only sign that he's heard her at all, even if his reply is annoying as hell to hear. Isn't that part important? Yoo Joonghyuk, who'd never bow his head to anyone or anything as long as the breath is left in his stupid body.
...She can't pretend that she doesn't know why he'd consider it, not when they'd talked about it just days ago. And knowing that reason -- well... it hurts. What else do they have? Who else do they have to turn to? She doesn't know.
Kim Dokja is here, but that doesn't mean he'll be always.]
Leave the Kenoma.
[she'd meant to sound just as unwavering in return, but she sounds tired instead. Because she already knows his answer, and because she knows she's going to try anyway, like an idiot.]
I've been in this city for two seconds, and I already know everything about it probably pisses you off.
no subject
Joonghyuk Just got here and Sooyoung is trying to convert him to the light. It’s not surprising—they would have both defected to make some stupid group of their own if they had met each other first… Unfortunately, as they both know, it cannot be so simple to leave. It isn’t simple for Joonghyuk to abandon hope. Until another way presents itself, he cannot and he must not.
It doesn’t matter if her words are true… Only having been here a couple of days, he hates Achamoth and how the denizens conduct themselves. It reminds me too much of their world’s shortcomings, the stars’ shortcomings, and man’s shortcomings. They’re interlinked too closely by the fallacy of eternity. ]
… I told you not to stand in my way.
[ For them, he will keep the light burning.
It is his only warning before he exchanges bow for a sword. The transition is quick and the sound of unsheathed metal screeches. In only a millisecond, he decides to slash at her with a sword that isn’t his style. ]
no subject
Well, the half of him that exists anyway.
This close, his eyes go wide as he takes in Yoo Joonghyuk in person. It feels like it's been years since he'd last seen him, despite it actually having only been a couple of months. But Dokja can tell, even like this, the differences between the two. The Yoo Joonghyuk from then and the one that stands braced in front of him here, and the same kind of ache that blooms across his chest and his mind as the familiar guilt rears its ugly head.
But he can't pay attention to that now. ]
What the hell do you think you're doing?
[ His voice is breathless as he speaks, partly from the running, partly from whatever the hell this is. He can't even spare Sooyoung a second's glance, all too aware that should he look away for the briefest of moments, then Joonghyuk will take advantage of that. ]
no subject
-- Hey, Kim Dokja!! Move the hell aside -- I'm gonna kick that bastard's ass!
[She's just mad that Yoo Joonghyuk made the first move before she could, and also frantic, because hello, she thought Dokja ran off to save his blorbos? Why is he here?
Is this better or worse than just her and Yoo Joonghyuk going at it? She doesn't want to know the answer to that question. She unsheathes the sword that she should have already had out and waiting, swearing again.]
no subject
This is their reunion, isn’t it? Even though he’s been with Dokja before arriving here… They journeyed with half of him to the end of the scenarios, hoping to piece whom they cherish together. If only Dokja could remember them one last time, they suffered another regression round with these desires distorted by love. Upon looking at him, questions arise: why do you look like that? Who did this to you? What are you doing?
Electricity runs through his entire body, crackling as his own sword flashes with lightning dancing along its blade. In his gold glowing leer, there’s anger as much as there is yearning and they guide his blade. He pulls back only to slam against Dokja’s ether blade, hoping that with his poor state he’ll be knocked aside.
Sooyoung said something about kicking his ass, but he kind of tuned her out. It’s a habit whenever she starts yapping. He doesn’t forget about it, though. It would be poor of him to underestimate another threat. ]
Do you want to die? [ Both of them, either of them. ] Turn back.
[ As long as they are in Pleroma, he believes they can’t save their world. ]
no subject
Neither of them will ever know how much time Dokja's spent in this place drowning in his sorrows. How much time he's wasted feeling sorry for himself, how little he'd prepared for a moment like this because he hadn't dared to dream or hope of a future he knew he didn't deserve. It's why his arms shake now with the effort to hold back Joonghyuk's sword, why he looks skinnier than before, why he's pushed back with relative ease even as he digs in his heels.
He'll never speak it to them, but does he have to when it's so plainly obvious how much he's been neglecting his own care?
His knees buckle from underneath him, every tensed muscle in his body screaming in protest when Joonghyuk slams his sword down on Dokja's own. There's no way he can match this kind of strength, and the momentum yanks him aside. At least he's quick to recover, blade arcing through the air with a tremendous speed back toward Joonghyuk. ]
Han Sooyoung, get out of here!
[ He doesn't know what they'd been talking about before his arrival, but if she's the target, it's best that she gets a head start away from all of this. ]
no subject
Sooyoung grits her teeth, already moving. Not away, despite being told to by both of them, but around Dokja so she can aim a stab towards Yoo Joonghyuk's sword arm, snarling --]
Shut the hell up! [to dokja, to yjh, to them both. It's always been Sooyoung's policy to run away, but she's spent so many of these past years running towards a goal, stoking the stubborn parts of her until they're lit aflame. If their stories were active, then she'd know which one would start playing --
"One Who Rebels Against Fate" maybe, or "One Who's Sick of Kim Dokja and Yoo Joonghyuk, Those Bastards".
Something to give her the power she needs, because even if Yoo Joonghyuk isn't truly her enemy -- he'll still fight like one. And with Dokja in this condition?]
Telling me to run when you're weak as shit -- take your own advice! You should run!
no subject
[ It's not unexpected with the knowledge he has and gave to Sooyoung. Dokja is only fragments of his fables now... In Horos, too, he is missing his abilities, but shouldn't he have more strength than this? Joonghyuk criticizes what he lacks and how he swings this sword that he's seen so many times in his memories. It hurts him to see Dokja looking so miserable yet willing to fight him—fighting really is the only small comfort he's allowed
He parries the incoming blow, black blade crackling with lightning as it uses the element itself to reinforce its metal. The current threatens to snap at Dokja's hands, but stops at the hilt. This time, Joonghyuk doesn't slash at at the other man again, but jumps back when Sooyoung comes after him with a stab. He's nicked in the arm, just a light trickle of blood drawn. Nothing that could stop him from gripping onto his weapon tighter.
This is stupid. They both should run? A storm starts brewing above this section of the citadel, dark and ominous, but no lightning comes. He has expended that ability, but the dark clouds are a warning for the lightning that's sent from Joonghyuk's sword, aimed at both of them. ]
no subject
... Not that they have to know that.
But the damage is there as he braces himself for a pain that doesn't materialize, eyes widening slightly as he watches the current retreat before they can reach his hands. There's a chance, a small voice whispers in his head. As long as Dokja can find an opening, maybe disarm Joonghyuk, then he'll have the opportunity he's been waiting for.
Too bad there are other ideas going on at the same time. He's barely given a moment to catch his breath when the lightning comes and, in typical Dokja fashion, he bolts toward Sooyoung, speed aided by Way of the Wind. As a follow up, white fur spreads itself across his body as he throws himself in front her, his back to the strike as he tanks the hit. The lightning snaps, hisses, and ultimately disperses against Beast King's Sensitivity. He's winded for a moment not just physically, but mentally.
He should've come here expecting a fight. Even so, he can't help but notice how much of a toll this is taking on him already. ]
no subject
...It's been so long since she fought alongside him.
She doesn't waste the opportunity Dokja gives her. She grabs one fur-clad shoulder with her free hand and then tries to shove him to the side, bye binch.]
I told you to move!!
[Maybe in another lifetime, she would have said thanks. But now? The space in front of her shivers -- and an Avatar pops up, grabbing the knife sheathed on her belt and slashing out towards Joonghyuk, attempting to carve a way that she can follow up with her sword,]
no subject
As enemies, he can’t show them all his hand and he must observe. So here is one avatar… Sooyoung‘s trademark—memories put into a vessel, given agency, and he can only wonder which parts of herself is she willing to sacrifice to run a knife into his flesh. He takes a step to the side, barely missing the knife by a hair. It cuts his side, through black fabric, and his blood drops onto the detritus floor.
His elbows position themselves as he grabs the hilt of his sword with two hands, then swings to decapitate the avatar. Sooyoung is smart enough to pull back her memories, isn’t she? She has mastered the art of puppetry… There’s no second where he worries for her mental stability.
Will the avatar survive? Will it dodge? Or will it sacrifice itself for its host? ]
no subject
but it's still an attempt at a distraction. She can sacrifice the memories she put in this one -- she doesn't remember what they were, but she wouldn't have put them in if they were important to her, right? In the meantime, she pulls another one into existence, but this one goes over to Dokja instead, pulling him up by the arm in an attempt to drag him away.]
Come on!
[It galls her, knowing that she only make so many. Normally, she'd have dozens. Normally, she'd have something more than just her sword to support them. But maybe that's all she needs, as she crouches low -- aiming her sword at Joonghyuk's gut,]
no subject
There's something only a few people in Horos know and something he doesn't ever want to reveal to Han Sooyoung and Yoo Joonghyuk. Dokja's fragile mental state had long since fragmented, no Fourth Wall to keep it protected, and as he watches the scene unfold in front of him now, his breath catches in his throat as panic builds in his chest. Seeing multiples of Sooyoung calls back a devastating memory of his own and his fingers curl in the dirt as a sudden wave of dizziness hits him.
He's ghastly pale by the time another one of the avatars reaches him, and he instinctively pushes the hand reaching for his arm away. ]
I'm not leaving.
[ His voice is rasp, but he forces himself back up to his feet as he tightens his grip on his sword. He needs to get back in there. He needs to stop Joonghyuk. ]
no subject
As Dokja figures that out, he looks down at her. If she were his height, he would have bashed her head with hers. Being short at this moment as a boon because all he manages is to grab her by the (flesh) collar. His trademark that she herself gave to him, all because one reader wanted this in a man. The gloved hand clutched onto her neck tightens, narrowing her windpipe.
It doesn't take much strength to lift her, does it? She weighs like grapes? ]
no subject
also yeah hsy does weigh like grapes, that's why she goes up, up, up into the air and gets to feel tall for once, something she'd enjoy if YJH wasn't trying to choke the life out of her. This is NOT sexy at all, this is a terrible kink
She digs the nails of her free hand into the skin of his wrist, clawing like the cat that scratched her earlier, and furiously kicks out with her legs. is she too far away to attempt a dick kick, MAYBE, BUT SHE'S GONNA TRY!!! She at least has enough presence of mind to keep controlling the Avatar near Dokja, who decides that beating Dokja unconscious is suddenly secondary to her desire to beat Joonghyuk unconscious, which is why she makes for the latter instead.]
Yoo Joonghyuk, you bastard, let go!
no subject
He practically has to throw himself back on the ground to dodge the oncoming head (what the fuck), and the dizzy spell from before worsens at the sudden movement. He sways oddly when he picks himself back up, but there's really no time to recover because Joonghyuk has Sooyoung by the neck. He remembers something like this, he thinks. Not all the pieces there to settle itself into a whole image, but enough of it that anxiety rises like bile in his throat. ]
Stop it!
[ With a trail of electricity sparking behind him, Dokja dives for Joonghyuk's exposed torso, aiming to knock him down to the ground with the hope that it'll be enough to get him to let go of Sooyoung. ]
no subject
In the corner of his eye, he sees the avatar abandon Dokja to come after him. Quickly, he tosses Sooyoung at her own avatar, but... He didn't anticipate Dokja diving immediately after him. His eyes widen and he tries to position his sword to bar the collision, but he isn't fast enough. Using Red Phoenix Shunpo for this would be stupid, so he digs his heels and prepares for impact. With a twist of his body, he tries to mitigate any damage to his side, but Dokja still lands into the cut. Pain spreads through his body from this hotspot, though it dulls in seconds, and he feels his balance tip.
Of course, as it's so familiar to him, he grabs Dokja in hopes it will keep him standing, but they're both going to stumble into the dirt like idiots. They roll, or Joonghyuk forces them to roll so he can come up on top (not sexy). ]
no subject
And where the hell is Dokja?
She peers up only to see him grappling with Yoo Joonghyuk, and she coughs again. Her vision's still too spotty to make a dive for her weapons, so she sends her Avatar instead -- using its vision to hopefully guide her,]
-- Asshole...!
[Okay, maybe she's not that winded?]
no subject
As for Dokja, he tries. He really does, using whatever momentum he can pick up to either roll out of Joonghyuk's grasp or end up on top (lmao), but it goes as expected. The back of his head hits the ground with a dull thud and for a few seconds, all he can see are stars. It doesn't help that somewhere along the way, he'd lost his grip on his sword, so all he can do with his hands is uselessly scrabble them against Joonghyuk's wrist to try and pry them off of him. ]
Are you [ coughs because he's sure he just swallowed some dirt ] done yet, you bastard?
[ Everyone gets a turn calling Yoo Joonghyuk a bastard today. ]
