EVENT #3: THE COST OF INNOCENCE

The Cost of Innocence
INVESTIGATION
As the Aions arrive in Venera, they will find the natural beauty of the city in sharp contrast to its uncomfortable aura. Though the sun still shines and flowers still bloom in a place filled with physical vibrancy and life, the air itself is impossibly still, as if wind no longer blows. You can taste the stagnancy of it when you breathe, and the pleasant sights only make that feeling of absence more haunting. The streets are mostly empty, with most of the city's residents hiding away in their homes, fearing the touch of whatever illness has caused this. That is, all the citizens besides those most affected, who wander the streets in a lifeless and painless daze.

Normally, Venera would be occupied by both Hylician and Achamite soldiers, but it quickly becomes apparent that both have abandoned the city, only guarding its furthest outskirts. Their reasons vary: the Achamite soldiers seem to take religious objection to the feeling of the city, believing it to be some trickery of the Innocent, while the Hylicians simply see it as a plague they have no interest in catching or spreading. Because of this, it will be easy for Aions of both sects to explore with little pushback from any form of law enforcement. The Kenoma will be directed into the city with warnings about the potential physical and spiritual danger while Pleroma will be able to sneak in mostly unbothered. After all, no one is eager to follow you.

Most shops and businesses are currently closed, though some uninfected individuals still nervously keep watch over their workplaces, fearing potential looting. It's difficult, but not impossible, to find people to talk to, and while the most plentiful wanderers are the infected, the reactions from those with their minds still intact will vary. Some will be eager to speak to anyone who looks like they're trying to do something about their situation, desperate for any source of outside help. If revealed you are an Aion, this may either entice them even further or cause them to retreat, as if fearing that you are somehow to blame for their plight. For those that are enticed, it will become clear that they hold onto faith that Aions are in Horos to save them, and will tell these new arrivals whatever they can without discriminating between sects.

The base level information that can be found is thus: the infection began at the same levels it has been in the rest of Horos, only for the numbers of the afflicted to rapidly accelerate upon the coming of the Innocent's Moon. Some see it as a form of divine punishment for their cooperation with the Regent, while the less cooperative citizens see it as a malady brought about by the Aions themselves, their only hope being that they will be able to clean up the mess they made. Some citizen have managed to corral their inflicted loves ones into their rooms and will be willing to introduce you; most of these individuals are past the point of conversation, and seem fully lost to whatever fantasy world they are experiencing. They are disinterested in eating or drinking and it seems like, without help, they are destined for a slow death of starvation and atrophy. That is, if their apathetic state doesn't result in a severe accident, as it has in many cases already.

Any other clues will take more dogged investigation. It will be a day or so after the majority of Aions have arrived in the city that the first signs of their own infections become clear.

HEAVENLY BODIES
The first to feel its effects will be the Innocents, Lovers, and Celebrants; like a voice has fully awakening to them, whispering of how their touch can be the cure to the others' pain. It bids them to take their fellow Aions into their loving embrace, to share this gift, as only suffering lies ahead. It expresses without words that it will be a shield for their Aion kindred, and that those that accept will become their outstretched hands to a cosmos that craves peace. Any form of physical contact with those three Legacies will either introduce or rapidly accelerate the infections experienced by the others, this effect only becoming more intense if the wielder intentionally forces the power of this strange entity into their victims.

Even without that accelerating touch, however, other Aions are not necessarily safe; the infection will still seep in, albeit more slowly. All Aions may experience a growing feeling of connection to the infected Venerans, as if the energy within them is being drawn into their their own bodies. As the Aion's symptoms worsen, the the ones suffered by the Venerans will gradually lessen, though not go away entirely. It seems that the Aions soaking up this strange power is enough to take the edge off of what is happening to the citizens: but at what cost?

Various symptoms will manifest in afflicted Aions with outcomes far more diverse and devastating than what the Veneran civilians have experienced. Visionaries, Firebrands, and Artisans will suffer the most catastrophic symptoms, the clash between their spiritual natures and that of the Innocence being the most extreme. This malady is characterized by its innate desire to quell its victims of their resistance, smothering them in artificial peace, even if it has to deprive them of their bodies and minds to do so.

It is not without treatment, however. It will gradually become apparent that feelings of intense suffering or upset are capable of purging the infection, that clash with painful reality seeming to wake them up from their trance and reduce or eliminate physical symptoms. The more intense the distress, the more effective it will be. Fortunately, this heightening of Aion spiritual energy has the added consequence of making empathic communion connections far more acute. Instead of just transmitting and receiving emotions and thoughts, Aions will find themselves more easily able to enter the delusions and memories of their kindred, drawing them out and manipulating them for this purpose. The catch is that they will only be able to access what is on the surface of the other Aion's mind.

When an infection is reduced or expelled this way, the energy causing it seems to be dispelled from the city, lowering the intensity of its ambient effects. While similar can be done to Veneran citizens to help treat them, the energy will not leave, and will either go into the Aion casting it out or return to the nebulous source of Innocence and eventually infect someone else. Something about going through the Aions specifically seems to act as a filter, as unpleasant of a way as it is to help.

IN THE SILENCE
For those unlucky enough to develop complete, or near complete, infections (IE. a full Innocence petrification) a presence will awaken within them regardless of their Legacy. It will urge them to join with it, to embrace the peace it offers, and to become the extensions of their will in this ravaged world. With an infection of this intensity, there will be little they can do but to hear its call. What exactly this would ultimately entail is unclear, but there is the sense that his entity is looking to join with you on a spiritual level. If your character becomes infected to this degree please let us know under the Committed Actions toplevel below along with the context of that transformation and whether or not they are being cured from it. You may receive some additional information in return!

QUESTIONS
What is the best way for Aions to travel to Venera?
The quickest travel paths are for Kenoma to take a boat from Achamoth, which will take about a day, and for Pleroma to teleport to the Celebrant's shrine and take either a carriage or river boat to the city (there are offshoot rivers not marked on the setting map). The riverboats would be the faster option option of the two, and would also take about a day. The carriages/delivery carts would be slower and take a couple days, but have relay access to horses and therefore could keep going overnight. Characters with flight are also able to use that, though flying right into the city might cause a bit of spectacle. Then again, none of the local law enforcement is eager to chase you at the moment.

Are Veneran civilians experiencing the same symptoms as the Aions?
Veneran civilians are only experiencing apathy/loss of self/daydreaming and maybe the loss of pigments/color for advanced cases. The more body horror orientated effects are Aion only and are being caused by their body's spiritual makeup.

Can 'cured' Aions be reinfected?
Yes! Even if cured or treated, symptoms can return or worsen again. This will keep happening until the build up of Innocence energy in Venera is entirely expunged, at which point the illness will fade away across the continent. Whether or not the Aions mere presence will be enough to trigger that is yet unknown, but it does seem to be helping lessen the effects suffered by the civilians, at least.

How long does the infection period last in Aions?
Chronologically, we are considering the infection period of the plot to last 2-3 days.

[ When he expresses regret, she shakes her head vigorously and raises her hands to ward off the apology in his sentiment. ]

N-No, please don't worry. Achamoth is a little... um, intimidating, but I've been doing alright. The other Aions there have been very helpful.

[ There's both understatement and overstatement there, and actually she's suffering a small amount, but it's all within the bounds of her tolerance. ]

I'm sorry that I couldn't go out and find you too. This is the first time I've been able to leave the city.

[ She looks at him more closely now that he's right in front of her. Maybe she's just too used to the splendor of Achamoth, but doesn't he look a little... rough, maybe? ]

Um, have you been okay? I don't know much about what it's like outside...
emblazer: (103.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-05-26 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That's more than understandable, as Thoma would have felt guilty if she had risked herself to find him in return. While he may not have any problems with the Aions under Kenoma's banner, that doesn't mean the other Pleromas would agree, especially after some of the accounts they've given about the Regent.

He waves off her apology, shaking his head slightly. ]

It doesn't matter. We did find each other in the end, and I'm mostly happy they didn't imprison you or worse.

[ Speaking of which, he knows the situation around the city is also not safe for either of them. ]

I'm doing as well as can be, but I'm worried about the state of this place. We were dispatched to investigate, but I haven't found out a whole lot. I'm also not sure if Aions are immune to infection.

[ He hasn't seen any affected yet, but if they spend enough time here, their chances might increase. That's the last thing he wants Gray caught up in. ]
gravings: (005a)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-05-27 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
[ "Or worse"...?? ]

Oh... we were sent to investigate too. Actually, ah, the Regent seemed to think the Pleroma might be the cause of all this.

[ There's no accusation in her voice, just a hint of sheepishness. Sorry her boss hates y'all, she's just a hapless grunt. ]

If... If it wouldn't cause you any trouble, would you like to investigate together? Two heads are usually better than one.

[ But mostly, it would feel wrong to split up with him again so soon... ]
emblazer: (023.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-05-30 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ...huh. Pleroma being the cause of this? That's news to him. ]

I haven't heard of anyone from Pleroma coming here before just now. I know Venera is loyal to the Regent, but that's no reason to harm and poison innocents just to get to him.

[ Thoma really hopes no one on his own side had anything to do with after touting that the Regent was the one who is cruel and violent in his ways. There's only way to really find out, and that's by continuing to search for Venerans who are willing to talk to them about how and when this all began.

At Gray's question, he shakes his head gently and offers her a smile. ]

It's really no trouble at all. There's a lot of ground to cover, and I've mostly worn myself out walking in circles. Speaking of which, are you hungry? Did they give you enough to eat?

[ He can't help motherhen-ning over her even while being aware that she likely has better access to food than he does at the moment. He just wants to make extra sure. ]
gravings: (100)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-05-31 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ She brightens when he agrees to cooperate, and her hood bobs rapidly in answer to his last question. ]

Oh, yes. We don't want for anything. Truthfully, I've never had so much money in my life.

[ A beat. ]

Would you like some? I don't think I can spend all of what I have on my own.

[ If he's motherhen-ning her, she can attempt to grandmotherhen him... She's a little worried that the rebel life might be tough. ]
emblazer: (074.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-06-04 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
[ Riches and food... okay, now he's the one who is a little envious, considering how much he had to hunt and fish to prepare a few decent snacks for the trip. ]

If you really were given that much, we wouldn't want it all to go to waste, would be? But let me at least trade you one of my rice balls.

[ It seems only fair, considering he doesn't want to be just one-sidedly leeching off her. ]

You're almost making it sound like paradise over there, but I know there was... black goo involved. Do you know what it does after you drink it?

[ Rand had made it sound like some sort of poison or potion that would turn them into mindless followers of the Regent. Thoma had been internally panicking about her and Kaeya since he'd received that bit of information. ]
gravings: (027a)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-06-04 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She readily nods again and reaches into her cloak for a gem to trade for his rice ball. She ends up holding out a ruby; she'd offer him more, but she didn't want to carry too many bulky gemstones on a long trip.

She pauses thoughtfully at his question. She'd asked something similar when she was dealing with the effects of the "black goo," and now she feels she has to give an answer similar to the one she got. ]

At first... it wasn't very pleasant. For a couple days, it felt like something was fighting to exist inside my body. After that, I felt normal again, though maybe... more like I belonged.

[ In regards to him calling it paradise, she declines to agree outright. But hating attention and adoration from strangers is probably more of a personal problem than anything... ]

We have a lot of freedom to do as we please... except the Regent likes to keep us close at hand. I'd like to see more of Horos... Have you had much opportunity to travel?
emblazer: (149.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-06-13 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Oh no... that looks too expensive. His eyes widen as he stares at the ruby in his hands, quite sure it will trade for a lot but not wanting to deprive her if it's all she has, which he realizes is probably a dumb concern to have. Given what he's heard about the Regent and Achamoth, this is more than likely just pocket change for her.

Still– ]

I can't accept this for just a few rice balls. It's way too much. I just wanted to make sure you got fed while on the trip.

[ And he's relieved about the black goo not doing anything that dangerous to her... except apparently inspiring a degree of complacency that's still a little alarming. Thoma will have to continue keeping an eye on her from afar to make sure it doesn't morph into anything more debilitating or that could bring any greater harm to her. ]

I thought it'd be a lot worse, but if you're really okay at the moment, maybe all that worry was unfounded. I've only been up and down the marketplaces just to find anything at all open, but it's been abandoned. Not really a whole lot of supplies left behind either, but I found a bit of sewing supplies and a couple of cobbling tools.

[ Maybe not the most useful to everyone else but definitely useful to Thoma. ]

How about you?
gravings: (005a)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-06-14 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She shakes her head. ]

This is the first time I've been outside the city... since the initial time.

[ Shrine time, that is. He doesn't take the ruby, but she doesn't retract it just yet either. ]

I would rather have a rice ball...

[ She thinks. She doesn't know what a rice ball is. ]

If you want, you can make up the difference next time. Maybe... you could sew me something?

[ Like a commission!! She's curious to know what kinds of things he can make... ]
emblazer: (035.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-06-19 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That he can definitely do! He just needs to find fabric, which he can probably accomplish in this town if there was anyone around to sell it to him. But by the time they meet again, he thinks he can manage a whole sweater and maybe some matching mittens for her. ]

Alright! I'll make you something to stay warm while you travel, and the ruby should cover it and the rice ball.

[ He accepts the ruby for now, hiding it away so nothing happens to it before handing Gray a wrapped up rice ball. It's made with salted fish and still fresh even if it might have cooled down a bit from the travel. ]

Did you make any more friends in Achamoth? I know Kaeya from my world is over there. Even though I'm only a little familiar with him, he's a knight from my hometown, so you can probably go to him if you need any help.

[ Kaeya already said he'd keep an eye on her anyway to put Thoma at ease. Thoma had been so worried about her ending up in a place like Achamoth with no extra support that he hadn't been able to breathe a true sigh of relief until seeing her now for his very eyes. ]
gravings: (092)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-06-20 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She'd be willing to accept a single sock if that was what he felt like making for her, so she's prepped to nod along the moment he agrees to her proposition. She looks forward to getting her sock or better, whenever he gets around to making it.

She takes the rice ball and unwraps it a tiny bit to see that it really does look as advertised. Maybe it's more of a triangle than a ball, but close enough. She is a bit hungry, so she considers eating it up until Thoma mentions Kaeya, at which point she smiles slightly and looks up. ]

You know Mr. Kaeya? And you even come from the same town... I'm glad for you.

[ Even if they didn't know each other well, she imagines it still must be a relief to have someone with a shared experience to talk to. It would be better if they were on the same side, but... it's still something. ]

He's been very kind to me. He helped me when I needed it and showed me some of his, ah, ice-making powers. [ Magic? Magecraft? She isn't sure which it would be. ] Though everyone's been patient with me... for the most part.

[ 95% patient, that's much better than expected! But she's been going on about herself for long enough. Part of their initial agreement was that they'd compare notes about their different sides, so... ]

The rest of the city... they're very devoted. To the Regent and their beliefs, and to us Aions too. They worship us like we're deities.

[ A hint of resignation enters her voice at that. ]
emblazer: (115.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-06-24 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Like deities, huh? Thoma can't even begin to imagine what that must feel like, but there are always drawbacks no matter how wonderful things seem from afar. The Regent must want something from the Aions to invite them so readily into his kingdom and to treat them like royalty. ]

Better to be welcomed than shamed or looked upon suspiciously. I know some locals around here who don't seem as fond of the Aions, so it's probably best for us if we keep that among ourselves.

[ He'd hate for Gray to be attacked because she's suspected of any kind of wrongdoing. Though Thoma hasn't met anyone outwardly hostile, that doesn't mean they aren't out there, waiting for the Aions to drop their guard. ]

Where were you even headed? I can walk you there on my own way.

[ Not that he has a real destination in mind. He's mostly been meandering and looking for signs of life, but he thinks he saw a bar that was opened a few yards back... which is probably not the best place to drag in someone like Gray. He'd rather leave her somewhere safer. ]
gravings: (005a)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-06-27 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ To be shunned or woshipped? Gray honestly doesn't know which she prefers. For now, she'll take his word for it that anonymity is the best option; it's what she prefers on normal days, anyway. ]

Our orders are to investigate, so...

[ Her own destination is also loose. She thinks for a moment about where they should go before defaulting to what's familiar, uncreative as she is. ]

How about the graveyard? We can see if very many people have passed because of the disease.
emblazer: (142.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-06-28 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
[ He knows she was a gravekeeper in her own world, but how spooky... That's the last place Thoma wants to hang out in, especially when he doesn't know what becomes of those who die from this affliction. Are their ghosts equally dazed and withdrawn, or do they become filled with wrath? ]

S-sure... I could walk you there and give it a quick glance around.

[ Smooth.

For all he knows, it's probably empty and simply in need of a bit of tender love and care –or gravekeeping. He doesn't want to leave Gray without support so he summons whatever bravery he can to begin walking. His spear is within reach, and he also has his pyro abilities back, so at least they're not as unarmed as they were in the caves. He'll just take the lead and direct her to the fenced off area.

In the dark. With all the spooky noises. Like owls, wind whistling, leaves tumbling... ]

–Did you hear something? Was that me or you? Please tell me it was your stomach.
gravings: (029)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-06-28 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
[ She glances over at the nervousness in his voice. She understands, really... Everyone ought to have a healthy fear of ghosts. It's just rare that she sees people who actually possess that healthy fear outside of cinema.

She, who's usually the most scared of ghosts of all, has the benefit of being able to sense their actual presence to a fine degree, so things like owls, the wind, and wayward leaves don't do a thing to her nerves. She figures that trying to reassure Thoma of that will be easier said than done, though; she knows well that fear is often irrational. ]

It's alright, Mr. Thoma. There isn't anything around... um, that's hostile, anyway.

[ There's that presence that's been with her since the beginning of the month, but that's a little different, and safe besides. For now.........

She comes up next to him so that she can gently pinch the fabric of one of his sleeves. Or his wrist armor, whatever he has going on there. ]

I can lead the way. If there are any spirits, I'll be able to sense them.
emblazer: (140.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-07-04 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That does make him feel better because he definitely isn't able to sense anything. Mostly, he just hears weird noises, and his imagination does the rest, which he realizes is not an actual effective way to handle the situation. ]

Alright, I'm right behind you, although I don't see any open graves anywhere.

[ If there were people who passed away recently, he thinks there would still be a few holes in the ground that were left exposed. As far as he can tell, there are only rows upon rows of gravestones, all with dates that indicate the locals had passed before either of them had stepped foot in this world. ]

No one's come to refresh the flowers recently. I wonder if the gravekeepers in Venera have also been afflicted.

[ So many of the gravestones look unkempt, the flowers wilted and patches of dirt and dust covering the names. He can't help wanting to tidy them up for the deceased and their families. ]
gravings: (009a)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-07-05 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe...

[ Glancing around, she sees that he's right. The place is worse-kept than she would tolerate of any cemetery she'd be taking care of. But they are here to investigate first and foremost, so she leads them over to what she wants to call a gravekeeper's hut but is more like an office, much more "modern" than what she's used to. A quick peek informs her that it's inactive, and after a moment of hesitation, she invites herself in. ]

Pardon me...

[ She announces herself just in case there's anyone ducked out of sight. But with no answer forthcoming, she begins to snoop around for anything like a ledger. ]
emblazer: (090.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-07-09 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ With the sky starting to darken, it doesn't help his unease trekking around a bunch of graves, so he quickly grabs a piece of wood and uses his pyromancy to light the other end before following Gray. There are a few more distant rustling sounds that he tries to keep convincing himself is just the wind, but he does spot one of the dazed villagers through the window lurking around the surrounding gate.

His gulp is slightly audible as he unconsciously scoots closer to Gray. ]

Did you find anything of use yet?
gravings: (012a)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-07-12 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
[ She looks at him sympathetically and allows him to scoot closer, showing him a worn notebook she's begun leafing through while he's near. ]

It seems like there was a slight jump in graves that needed to be prepared in the first half of this month... but the records suddenly stopped not long ago.

[ What does this tell them? Not anything especially important at the moment, admittedly, though it tells a story of the rate of proliferation in the city. ]

... The gravekeeper probably won't be around, then. I wonder what everyone is doing with their dead.
emblazer: (024.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-07-16 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know when all this started? Does it line up with the beginning of the month?

[ He couldn't confirm how well it correlated with their own arrival, so he's been wondering if this at least gives them an exact window for the first infections. It would certainly lend more credibility to the theory that outsiders like them brought the disease/enchantment with them. ]

It could be that whoever was doing the record-keeping got afflicted so there was no one to move or inter the bodies, no one to take the names either after a point.

[ How sad... though he hasn't had the misfortune of running into corpses. Yet. Almost all the afflicted he'd seen had been alive but sickly-looking, so he isn't sure how much longer they'll be able to sustain themselves in such a stunted state. ]
gravings: (010a)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-07-21 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're probably right. And it does look like things started changing around the beginning of the month...

[ The month of the Innocent. Maybe the Regent and the rest of Achamoth have a good reason to feel lukewarm about Inoseri after all.

Gray gently closes the notebook of records and palces it where she found it. She can only hope that the gravekeepoer will be back to care that she did so. She considers the hut for a moment, thinking about what a mess the graveyard's affairs must be. ]

... I think I'm going to stay for a while longer and see if I can help straighten things up. You don't have to stay if you don't want to.

[ She wouldn't blame him at all for wanting to go, considering how nervous he seemed coming in. ]
emblazer: (124.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-07-23 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[ While he should look after her, there doesn't appear to be any immediate danger. The Venerans are too far away and too dazed to be a threat to her at the moment –are probably more of a threat to themselves–, and there are other places he wants to investigate while he has the chance.

He nods after giving her words enough consideration. ]

I should catch up with some of the other Pleromas and take a look at some more of the nearby shops and restaurants. Something is bound to still be open.

[ He thinks he'd seen a light on just a few blocks away, so he should definitely follow up on it and check it out. ]

Will you be okay in the meantime? You know you can call out if you need help. I may not have the weird head-link with you, but I'll still come running if I hear you.

[ And if not him, maybe Kaeya or one of the other nearby Kenomas. ]
gravings: (100)

[personal profile] gravings 2022-07-25 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She smiles slightly at his concern. He really is too nice... ]

I'll be okay.

[ Though if she does run into trouble, she will, admittedly, try very hard to not bother anyone and take care of the problem herself. In matters of the graveyard, she has to maintain at least a small amount of pride. ]

Please be careful. If you need help, I'll probably be here for a while.
emblazer: (047.)

[personal profile] emblazer 2022-07-26 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Alright, I'll come check on you later and bring you some more food when I find some. See you around, Gray!

[ He waves at her before taking off in the opposite direction, sprinting a little noticeably quick because he's dying to get out of the cemetery and visit somewhere a lot less spooky... Hopefully, Gray really will be okay on her own, and all his worries would have been just a product of his own unfounded paranoia.

If not, he'll come running back as quickly as possible. ]
